My Experience Going to School To Become a Heavy Equipment Operator

Something I’ve Always Dreamed About Doing

This major is the only thing I ever really wanted to do as a career. I’ve been around this my entire life. There’s pictures of me at two years old sitting on a backhoe and just waiting for someone to come start the key. I’ve always enjoyed being able to do something with the machine, move dirt with it. I think it’s neat to be able to run something that massive and be able to do something so fine with it. It’s just something that’s always interested me.

How the Class Structure Works

I recently took classes to become a heavy equipment operator. You take two semesters before you actually get into the machine. You do your site modifications, mechanics and safety classes. All the book work to know how that machine works and all the safety hazard with the machine. When you enter your third semester and you enter that machine you know everything that’s going on.

There are a couple days of housekeeping tasks but then everyone in the class gets to pick and machine and get in it and turn the key. What a relief that is like to know this is why I got into this industry. Right away you go out and start moving dirt. You could tell that everyone was excited because we all waited a year to do this.

Picking a Piece of Equipment to Run

The school has dump trucks, articulating trucks, brand new CAT equipment, the latest and greatest. I mean there is so much equipment up there that everyone had something to do every day. There’s more equipment than students.

Everything I’ve ever heard from the industry is that this college really trains its operators well. They teach you so much about the equipment and procedures that not every school does. Students from this college are more of an investment because they will be able to achieve more things in their career because they were well trained. They’re going to make the company’s money back a lot quicker than other schools.

Decision to Get Degree of Try It On My Own

During my last year of high school I was trying to decide whether it was worth going to the extra years of college or whether it would be better to just enter the workforce and try to make it on my own. I’m glad I made the decision to go to college because I’ll have that degree for the rest of my life. Yea, it’s two more years out of your life but it’s really not that much. Once I have that degree I can really do whatever I want.

Dangers and Hazards Around Heavy Equipment

There are many, many dangers and safety hazard when working around heavy equipment. Before entering the area where the heavy equipment will be located there will likely be some minimum required PPE or personal protective equipment that will be required, including a hard hat, ear protection, safety glasses, a safety vest, safety gloves, and safety boots.

Always have communication in and around you at all times. Keep a safe working distance from the moving equipment and always be in a position where you can see the operator’s eyes. If you can’t see the operator they likely cannot see you. Cellphone use is a violation because it distracts your attention and you can unknowingly put yourself in harms way. This brings up the next important point: Be Alert, always be alert.

Be aware of all moving objects. Be extra alert as you approach a large truck. Avoid blind spots around trucks if you can’t see the trucks side mirrors the truck driver can’t see you. Before you operate a piece of heavy machinery you must first be trained by an authorized instructor. When traveling keep the loaded bucket low and watch your overhead clearance. When you’re moving with the bucket raised never swing the bucket above anyone’s head when people are in the work area. Never allow people to ride in the bucket or anywhere else on the equipment besides a designated seat for a person.

Employees must maintain a safe distance while the equipment is operating. Employees should be aware about what is going on around the equipment. People on the ground should be communicating with other people in the area about what the equipment is specifically doing.

For heavy haul trucks always maintain a safe distance from equipment and always practice safe driving speeds. Always be aware of other commercial moving equipment and moving pedestrians. Always be in contact with radio communication in case someone is trying to contact you in an emergency.

For locomotive assume that there is a train on the track at any given time. The reality is that trains can come from either direction at any time during the day or night. Obey all warning signs and signals and watch the overhang. Never sit on the edge of the station platform. Stand away from the platform edge and pay attention to warning paint on the ground and raised markings. Stay at least 3 feet from the train when it’s coming in or out of the station. Only cross in designated areas and remember to look both ways before crossing. Watch out for the second track. Two tracks may mean two trains. Make sure all the tracks are clear before crossing. Never walk or run on railroad track. Remember tracks are for trains. Stay away and stay alive.

Learn the Basics to Operate Your Skid Steer

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I’m going to be talking about how to safely operate a skid steer. You always want to start off by reading your operator’s manual so you know what weight capacities your skid steer can safely lift. All the different models of skid steers have different weight capacities and you can get in a lot of trouble real quick with bodily injury and property damage if you don’t know what you’re doing and what your machine can lift. Walk around your skid steer and make sure that the wheels and bucket both look fine. Make sure your engine compartment is safely latched in the back you don’t want to start operating a machine and have the back engine hatch open up on you. In the front on the top of the bucket there are steps to put your feet on as well as the entrance to skid steer. This is where you want want to step up in the machine. There’s also handles on both sides I’d recommend always trying to use both handles to step up in the machine. Step up on the step and lift yourself up in the machine. Always have at least three points of contact. You’re gonna realize a couple things. You got joysticks on each side. These are going to control the mobility of the skid steer, foe, aft, left and right. You’re also gonna notice pedals on the bottom on the left and right. These are going to operate the bucket arm and the bucket. The pedal on the left side is going to operate your arm. On the right side is going to operate your bucket going up and down.

Make sure you take stock of everything around, you got your throttle there, and you need to adjust your seat it’s a good idea if you’re taller or shorter you want to make sure that your feet are safely and firmly on the pedals so that you can push forward and back in operation. If you can’t reach them that well you’re not going to be able to do what this machine is capable of. You got a safety belt that pulls down on the side. You have to pull that down to start the machine. It will not start without pulling down your safety belt.

For some machines there’s no key, they will be auto start. Some of them have a key. If it has a key turn it halfway first and then make your adjustments. Take your parking break off and all, but for some machine you just need to push the start button and the run button at the same time and hold.

Now that you’ve started the machine the screen is going to come up and you’ll notice that a couple things come on. The temperature gauge, the oil, the battery life, and rpm. Also on the top left side you’re going to notice there’s a readout for the amount of hours, and the gas. The traction override button is up front. That’s the next thing you want to do is press the traction override on.

Next thing you want to do is just take the parking brake off. Now you’re ready to roll. As I said before. Left foot is the bucket arm. Pull back toward your heel with the left paddle and it’s going to raise your broken arm up. Pushing the left food back down and the arm is going back down. On the right pedal push forward with your toe and that’ll push down on the bucket, back with your heel and that will raise the bucket.

For operation, the right joystick is going to control the right two wheels. Pull back for reverse. Same thing on your other side. Left is going to control the left side. You’re going to go double back if you want to go straight back. Double forward for straight forward.

Now that you know how to safety operate this make sure you still always read the owner’s manual, It’s very important. You need to know what your machine is capable of and all the little nuances that’s particular to each individual machine. When you’re done operating, put your bucket back down and put on parking brake. Paul up on the seat belt. That will lock the machine so it’s not going to go anywhere. Now even if you touch your pedals the machine is locked and it’s not going to go anywhere. Turn the machine off with the stop button and you’re all done.
